Joan & Vicki in India
We spent time with our partners in various places, and visited a village in the state of Andhra Pradesh where we were privileged to sit in on an English teaching program for children. The older children successfully read English stories while the younger children recited the alphabet and words beginning with different letters. Learning English will enable these children when older to have greater job opportunities. Jacob’s Well will be commencing this program in Orissa in the new year.
Rejoice
We then travelled to Orissa and arrived at Rejoice to be greeted by our House Parents and children. They sang a welcoming song and performed a drama piece in English that they had prepared for us.
It was school holidays for the children so they were involved in a seven day teaching program learning about light, water, agriculture, stars, birds, fish, animals and life skills. Their creative skills were developed through a series of drawing projects, games and practical demonstrations. All this culminated in a mural depicting the elements of the series. The kids had a wonderful time being creative, playing games, getting paint all over themselves and learning, all while having lots of fun! So did we! They also spent time honing their jewellery making skills by beading necklaces and bracelets for everyone.
Seven New Children Arrive
Seven new children arrived on our second day at Rejoice. Over the next few days their new brothers and sisters at Rejoice helped them settle in, surrounding them with love and helping them in all aspects of their new routine. We are seeking sponsors for these children, so if you or anyone you know is interested in helping transform the life of one of these children please email joan@jacobswell.org.au or phone 61 3 9803 6115.
We also hired a cook and an assistant to join our team at Rejoice to help cater for the increasing number of children.
How Sweet It Is
On our fifth day at Rejoice we travelled to a village where we had sunk a bore well last September. The villagers gathered around to tell us how ‘sweet’ the water was and offered us a tumbler each to join them in a drink. The water was refreshingly cool given the heat of this time of year, and the taste was indeed ‘pure’. As well as using the bore well for drinking water the villagers are able to wash in clean water, lowering the risk of skin irritations and diseases. We then ventured to the village where we sank our first bore well and spent some time with the villagers there.
Travelling back we got caught in a torrential downpour and later that evening we experienced a spectacular display of thunder and lightning. This was not the last of such displays, given the extremely high temperatures the average daily temperature was 40+ degrees.

- Building Progress
The building work has been progressing thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, with the multipurpose hall nearly complete. Unfortunately the work now has slowed due to heavy rains. There is approximately six weeks of full production left and, depending upon the severity and length of the wet season, the multipurpose hall/kitchen/cool room is now scheduled for completion in October.
To assist with the catering for our 43 children we have built a temporary kitchen extension. Once the new kitchen in the multipurpose hall is completed we can then use this area as a laundry.
The boundary wall foundations have been commenced and will continue depending upon the rains.
- Rejoice Kakinada

They have many years experience and are highly skilled in areas of teaching and home management. We are privileged to have them. Rejoice Kakinada will provide for 25 children and 10 widows. Just as in our other home, the children will receive total care in a loving environment, as will the widows who will also help care for the children and develop their own skills as part of our self-sufficiency goal. If you or anyone you know is interested in helping transform the life of one of these children or widows please email joan@jacobswell.org.au or phone 61 3 9803 6115.
