  • Rejoice Mastiput - It’s a Girl!
Rejoice Care Centre is proud to announce the birth of our third calf, while our cow’s first calf is pregnant and should be producing milk by July. The new batch of chickens will soon be laying eggs, providing an ongoing supply of protein for the children, who are actively involved in the farming at Rejoice and enjoy feeding and caring for the animals. They are very creative and the child in charge of the chooks has even made a topiary ‘poultry’ sculpture out of one of our bushes!

Our vegetable garden has yielded an extensive crop of onions, tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, eggplants, cauliflowers, potatoes and radishes, just to name a few. As well as providing excellent nutrition for the children, the surplus was subsequently sold to local workers at a reduced rate. Our fruit trees have grown rapidly with a big growth spurt during the wet season, while the pawpaw trees have yielded their first large crop.

The children’s accommodation building has been given a creative face-lift with a spectacular paint job. Everyone is enjoying the vibrant result.

Their education is progressing well. From the beginning of May they will be on school holidays, and are looking forward to having a lot of fun playing games and other exciting activities with a small team from Australia.

  • Building Progress
The boundary wall is now halfway around our 9 acres of land with the side and front of both blocks completed. The Multipurpose Hall is progressing well and is on schedule to be finished before the wet season.

  • Life Giving Water and Education
Bore well work continues steadily in two districts, however in one area we encountered impervious rock. To reach the water table - over 100 feet down - extra rods and extended drilling was required. One well in a particular village required three months of drilling! There is a very small stream nearby that reduces to barely a trickle in summer, making it inadequate to supply the village, yet this is typical of many places.

There are areas of Orissa where the water contains high levels of iron and excessively high fluoride, which can be dangerous to people’s health. Consequently Jacob’s Well has provided test kits to check the water quality and mineral content. All our wells to date have been tested and reports are the water is ideal for drinking.

The people in these remote villages are illiterate and have receive no formal education. Jacob’s Well is planning to provide literacy programs and skills training courses to provide better understanding and greater job opportunities.
