Field Report 9 January 06
9 million living in slums
The slums are overwhelming - there are 9 million people living in the slums of Mumbai.
The average dwelling is about 5 by 3 feet, with 5-7 people living together.
The predominant building material is blue plastic followed by corrugated iron. There are 10 x 10 feet dwellings with up to 40 people living in them at any one time. The inside temperature can get up to 34 degrees celsius.
There is so much poverty, yet people have some clothing and food. Most
people in the slums are daily labourers, so income and the future are uncertain. The slums can be bulldozed at any time and the people lose everything and have to start again.
